LECTURE:
-Week5 (20/5/2024)
EXPOSURE: In photography, exposure is the amount of light which reaches your camera sensor or film.
The main parts of the camera:
Camera body: Shutter, Image sensor, LCD screen
Camera lens: Aperture/ Iris
The camera body is a light proof box.
There are only two camera settings that affect the actual “luminous exposure” of an image: shutter speed and aperture. The third setting, camera ISO, also affects the brightness of your photos.
LENS PERSPECTIVE
Different lenses are designed for different for different purposes. Lenses can be categorized by FOCAL LENGTH.
FOCAL LENGTH: Focal length is the measurement (in millimeters) from the optical center of a camera lens to the camera’s sensor.
DEPTH OF FIELD: The proportion of the image that is reasonably sharp and in focus.
DSLR VS SMARTPHONE:
DSLR: Familiar with device, Good quality, Easy to learn, Still limited
SMARTPHONE: Still limitedGood, but not great, Non-ergonomic shape
Smartphones vs Cameras = Convenience vs Quality
DSLR cameras are designed to capture images. Phones are designed to carry out a multitude of functions.
Phone cameras are very limited by size. The size of the lens and the size of the sensor that captures the photos. Entry-level DSLR have much larger lenses and sensors than mobile phones do.

PRACTICAL:
-Photo Manipulation
Part 1
For this assignment in photoshop, we used the following:
Quick Selection Tool
Layer Mask
Filters
Color Correction
In part 1a, we are instructed to subtract the background of the Shazam image and paste it to the mansion image, and make it blend in as much as possible.
·Process
First, I used the magic wand tool to remove the background from the Shazam image.
Then I paste Shazam into the background image, resize it, and match the colors with the background. I changed the contrast, hues, and brightness of the image to match it.
Adjust color correction: MATCH COLOR (Image➡️Adjustments)
Match image quality: ADD NOISE filter to Shazam
Fig.3a.02
Then I create a shadow for Shazam.
1.Create NEW LAYER (and rename as Shadow)
2.Use BRUSH TOOL
3.Draw a black shadow on the background of SHAZAM’s layer
Fig.3a.03&04
What I need to do next is to create a NEW LAYER. (SHAZAM’s reflection).
1.SHORTCUT KEYS: POLYGONAL LASSO Tool,
2.Duplicate the SHAZAM’s layer
3.Rename the layer as reflection
At the same time, I changed the contrast, hues, and brightness of the image to match it.

-Part 2
Based on SHAZAM exercise, then I need to create the same steps and insert my own photo to replace the SHAZAM’s layer by following these steps:
1.Take a photo of yourself using the right lighting techniques
2.Apply the Shazam’s exercise techniques
3.Replace the Shazam’s layer with YOUR OWN PHOTO
4.Apply suitable Color Correction to finalize your work
I chose this photo, first of all, because it meets the requirements of the full-body photo for the assignment. Secondly, the photo itself has a light sensation on the left side of the hair, which can be well matched to the background provided by the assignment.
·Process
Fig.3b.02
However, in the process of production, I found that the proportion of my full-body photo was too long, which would make the produced picture look fake. I think this may be because the photo was taken on the tilt, which made it look strange, so I adjusted the proportion of my full-body photo again. Then put it in Photoshop and recreate it.

Here are some original photos given:
Ex.3b.03_Original
The steps taken were:
- Copy a selected area of the "face color" reference photo, then paste it into a new layer on the grey photo.
- Use the eyedropper tool to choose 3 tones from the reference photo, and use the brush tool to draw a small color palette. (Repeat with the "hair color" reference photo.)
- Use Quick Selection Tool to select the hair area.
- Create a clipping mask with the selected area.
- Go into properties, use the soft edge brush to adjust the edges of the hair for a more natural look.
- Click and add "Solid Color", use eye dropper tool to select the "hair color palette".
- Apply the layer mask of the selected area to the solid color.
- Choose between "multiply", "overlay" and "soft light" to apply to the layer for blending.

REFLECTION:
Experience: For this assignment, it is difficult to select the photo first, because the background image is fixed, so you need to find a photo with the background color and not obtrusive.
The work after selecting the photos was not as complicated as I expected, but for me, who is new to photoshop software, it was a good experience to get familiar with the functions of photoshop.
Observations: I observed how the light and shadow usually cast, its position and intensity, because I need to put the photo in the background, so in order to blend in better, I need to add shadows to myself also, to increase the authenticity of the photo.
Findings: Through this assignment, I found out how to matting the picture, adjust the color, light intensity and contrast of the picture, and use the Gaussian blur filter to better beautify the picture.
