LECTURES:

Week1
The first class of the new semester is an online class, which introduces us to the course summary and requirements of the whole semester.

Week2
Mr.Hafiz gave us a tutorial/game for learning how the pen tool works. This game is a good practice for us to draw with a pen tool in Adobe application.

Week3
Starting this week, we will start the homework for the Vormator challenge. Vormator is the ultimate challenge of your creativity: the aim of project is to give each student the chance to show their ability to create a stunning piece with limited means.

-CHARACTER DESIGN BASICS

Shapes
It is used to identify a character from one another. Explore the possibilities of combining different interesting shapes for design.
Fig.1c.01

ADD SOMEWEIGHT TOTHEIR PERSONALITY
Use your character's persona as the basis of the shapes for your design.
Fig.1c.02

Colour
Colours plays an important role indetermining and separate the basic characteristics of heroes, villains and even background characters. Different colours give impressions of different emotions and is easily relatableby the viewers.
Fig.1c.03

Emphasis and Contrast
A good character exaggerates on the emphasis and contrasting visual elements to make the design stand out by using colours and different shapes
Fig.1c.04&05&06

Harmony
All shapes, lines, colour, motifs, patterns must be put together in a tasteful manner. Think visual hierarchy and how it reflects with the narrative of the characters
Fig.1c.07

Expressions, Poses
Clear visualization of your characters behaviours, quirks, personalities make it easier to appeal to your viewers.

Week4
-CHIAROSCURO
The use of light and dark to create the illusion of three-dimensional volume on a flat surface. In paintings the technique refers to clear tonal contrast to suggest three-dimensional volume and modelling of objects and figures.
Fig.1d.01

The purpose of chiaroscuro is to increase the scene’s dramatic tension by exaggerating the subject’s importance using color or light contrast.
Fig.1d.02_Predominantly cast in light

a certain type of painting method in which significant details such as faces and hands are illuminated by highlights which are contrasted with a predominantly dark setting.
Fig.1d.03_TENEBRISM

In other application of chiaroscuro for visual artworks such as comic, film, digital works -this is an artistic lighting choice which the focus point or subject of a scene is brightly colored or contrasted with a dark background.
Fig.1d.04

·LOW-KEY LIGHTING
A style of lighting for photography, film or television. It accentuates the contours of the subject by throwing areas into shade while a fill light or reflector may illuminate the shadow areas to control contrast.

Chiaroscuro is used in visual narrative because this method is an excellent lighting choice
to differentiate positive vs negative spaces.
Positive: Refers to subject matter or object ofinterest in a visual.
Negative: Refers to the filled space orbackground that surround subjectmatter or object of interest in visual.
Fig.1d.05

·Benefit
INCREASE DRAMATIC TENSION: Gives thrilling emotive depth on the look and feel in the scene.
CREATE SENSATIONAL EFFECT: Helps elevate fantastical viewpoints to emphasis on the narrative.
ATTRACT ATTENTION: Establish visual hierarchy, the main point of the scene.
MAKE TASTEFUL COMPOSITION: The play on negative VS positive spaces creates attractive scenes.

Exercises:

-Task 1 Ex.1a: Using Pen Tools

In order to let us better use the pen tool, the teacher assigned us two small exercises, one is to track the eight figures, the other is to complete the small game.

-Task 1 Ex.1b: Vormator Challenge character

With these shapes we are challenged to create own unique design, within the limitations provided in the Rulebook. We are thus challenged to create a unique piece within a strict set of rules. It all comes down to pure skills and creativity in this project.

Fig.Ex.1b_Shapes given

Allowed: To rotate, flip and duplicate the Elements; Can create your own color schemes (e.g. use adobe Color) ; Use gradients; Use filters or effects (e.g. drop shadows); skewing or free transform You add, subtract, intersect and group elements as you see fitThe use of color is unrestricted.

After knowing the assignment requirements, I began to look for inspiration on the Internet.

-Inspirations & Ideas
I want to make a dragon, because this year is the year of the Dragon, so the reference is all about dragon.

·The unifying feature of these images is the hair on the back of the head, which I think can be perfectly produced with the prescribed shapes.
·In addition, the choice of colors is undoubtedly based on warm tones.

-Process

In the process of production, I found that the classification of layers is very important, because my production is too complicated, if the classification of layers is not good, the stacking of layers before and after will affect my design.

-Task 1 Ex.1c: Pokemon Card Composition (Final)

Although the character design was completed, I was not very satisfied, because the dragon I wanted to show was majestic and fierce, and what I did was too cute, so I redesigned a character.

character

For me, in my second production, I was obviously proficient and improved a lot compared with the first one. I used a lot of Unite, Minus front, Intersect and Exclude among graphics to complete the character design.
Fig.Ex.1c.08

I also got better at classifying layers between complex graphics.

Pokemon Card

I made the background on IPad, because I think IPad can better cut the graphics and choose the pattern I want.

Fig.Ex.1c.10

1. In the choice of colors, I still mainly use warm colors, but contrary to the first production, the role highlighted by this warm color is not cute, but looks very strong and fierce role.
2. As for the background pattern, I chose the traditional Chinese auspicious cloud pattern.

Fig.Ex.1c_Final Background (Final)_JING KEYAO

After completing the production of characters and cards, I combined them, and the following is my final complete Pokemon Card.

Final Pokemon Card_JING KEYAO (0370732)
  • Name: Ember
The name "Ember" is derived from the small, glowing fragments of a fire, symbolizing the spark that can ignite a powerful blaze. This name perfectly encapsulates her role as a fire-centric trainer who can turn even the smallest advantage into a raging victory.
  • Type: Fire
Her mastery of Fire-type moves is unparalleled, allowing her to execute powerful attacks with precision and intensity.
  • Appearance:
Her entire body is made of fire, red, orange and yellow, with black armor for protection.
  • Abilities:
1. Incinerate: Ember has an innate ability to manipulate fire, both enhancing her Pokémon's attacks and creating protective barriers of flames.
2. Heat Blast: She is naturally resistant to extreme heat, enabling her to endure environments that would be unbearable for others.

-Task 1 Ex.2a: Pear Chiaroscuro

Light and Shadows: Drawing in chiaroscuro Using shapes, establishing light and dark giving it weight.
First of all, we will trace the pear with the pen tool to outline, the right part is free to think.

Fig.Ex.2a.01

After tracking it, we need to color it, and separate the shadows with different colors, and finally finish the cutting operation.

Fig.Ex.2a.02

The final task was to use the skull as a shaded part of the pear.

-Task 1 Ex.2b: Character Chiaroscuro

Using tools we learned in previous exercises, we are supposed to make a chiaroscuro image by selecting, tracing, and coloring

Fig.Ex.2b.01

This is the texture I found online, and Mr.Hafiz asked us to apply the texture to the shadow part of the character.

REFLECTION:

Since this course is after DPI, I am already familiar with the use of pen tools. However, in the production of character design, because I want to design too complex, the classification of layers is particularly important for me, and the reasonable use of shape is also a big difficulty, because shapes are regulated and can not be changed, which limits my imagination. But I knew that with enough patience and enough time, I could do it, and the result was, I did it! For me, this is a breakthrough for myself.
