Design Principle-Task1 : Exploration

Here is the Module Information Booklet (MIB) of Design Principles (GCD60804) :

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

a. Principle of design :

    1. Gestalt theory

This theory emphasizes how humans perceive and organize visual elements into meaningful wholes. And it's based on five principle:

        a. Principle of Similarity

        b. Principle of Continuation

        c. Principle of Closure

        d. Principle of Proximity

        e. Principle of figure/ground

Overall, the Gestalt theory highlights how our brains naturally organize visual information into coherent patterns and forms, influencing how we perceive and interpret the world around us.

      2. Contrast

Contrast is achieved by juxtaposing elements that differ in characteristics such as color, size, shape, texture, or value. Thus designers can emphasis a point or content.

    3. Emphasis

Emphasis guides the viewer's eyes to a focal point or key elements within a composition. It can helps to create hierarchy and convey the most important information effectively.

       4. Balance

  • Symmetric Balance: when two halves of the work are identical.
  • Asymmetrical Balance: takes into account qualities of hue, intensity, and value.
  • Radial Balance: when objects are positioned around a central point.

Both of them help to ensure that the design feels harmonious and visually appealing.

     5. Repetition

Repetition is not simple to use monotonous elements, it creates varieties in angles, exposure or composition, etc. Thus make the design seems to be more rhythm.

       6. Movement

Movement comes from the kinds of shapes, forms, lines, and curves, which make the subject seem to be moving in a visual image. And its leads viewers eyes moving by following the composition.

        7. Harmony & Unity
  • Harmony: combining elements to accent their similarities.
  • Unity: wholeness achieved through the effective use of the elements and principles of art.

         8. Symbol

The symbol focus on creating meaningful and effective symbols that communicate ideas, concepts, or identities, while also resonating with audience.

         9. Word and Image

Word and image focus on the effective integration of text and visual elements to convey a message or idea. Suitable typeface and strategic positioning of type will result in visual hierarchy and balance in a work of design.

b. UNSDG GOAL:

The UNSDG GOAL I selected is goal NO.1 :"No Poverty". This goal aims to end poverty in all its forms everywhere by 2030. It encompasses various dimensions of poverty, including income poverty, lack of access to basic services, social exclusion, and vulnerability to shocks.

Achieving this goal requires targeted interventions to empower the poor, ensure social protection, promote inclusive economic growth, and address the root causes of poverty such as inequality and lack of opportunities.

Additionally, poverty alleviation efforts are interconnected with other SDGs, such as those related to health, education, gender equality, and sustainable livelihoods. This goal embodies and teaches us that if we do a good job in each part, we can achieve progress and development in all aspects of the world's goals.

c. An Artwork:

Below is a painting I had chosen for this Task.

"It Feels Good Be So Rich !!"
Silvio Severino  (Ireland)
Collage, Paper on Paper
35W*45H*1D cm

Why?

In this design work, the author wants to express immigration and social injustice. The reason why I choose this work as the representative of poverty is that it reflects the gap between the rich and the poor in the society.

The colorful part is obvious, representing the rich or well-off people, and the hand and black dress behind it may represent the high happiness index of the society, this people are loved by the national government, such as the high level of education, advanced medical facilities, and perfect social security system, etc.

Another part is precisely the kind of poor people that the UNSDG wants to help. From this part, we can see that poverty has left them small, with no clothes, no place to live, and the land is dry and cracked.

It can be seen that poverty is not only determined by the wealth of people, but also affected by the country, government, society, politics and other comprehensive factors. I think this is also what the author wants to convey, he wants to tell us that we should work together to improve all aspects of society, so as to drive economic growth and achieve real NO POVERTY!

The design principles expressed in the artwork:

1.Symbol:  Use figurative representations. The lady's necklace represents wealth.

2.Contrast: A sharp contrast of colors, with bright colors representing rich people and gray representing poor people.

3.Balance: Use asymmetrical balance and follow the Rule Of Thirds. The earrings and necklace divide the design into three parts and make the design feels visually appealing.
